How to Kick Ass in Monopoly (Tips & Strategy)

Who doesn’t want to achieve their life dream of being a Monopoly master? About 750 million people have played the game Monopoly at least once in their life, so there are potentially a lot of players out there to show dominance over. There is a bit of luck involved with winning in Monopoly, but there is a great amount of strategy to improve your chances of winning. In this article, I’ll share some tips and strategies to help make you the king of Monopoly (at least in your own house).

The Properties

The key to winning is to buy a lot of properties. Well, duh. But more than that, you should know what properties are worth it. At the beginning of the game, you should buy every thing you can possibly land on. The main colors you should have your eyes on are Orange and Red. Orange is the most landed on color, and Illinois Avenue (red) is the most landed on space. Do your best to trade for these properties. After Red, Yellow is landed on most often.

I try to get at least one property of each color so I have more bargaining power in trading. Of course, this is easier said than done, but it’s a good idea to keep in mind. Monopoly is a game of trade and to increase your odds of winning, you want to have the properties that your opponents want. Money should be spent so don’t hold it. Spend it on properties, unless you know you have a high risk of having to pay out that money to your opponent’s rent.

Monopoly house & hotelAre railroads worth owning? Yes, usually they are, especially if you can get at least three of them. They are landed on very often and you don’t need to build houses or hotels on them. However, don’t trade away valuable properties or a ton of cash just to get another railroad. In my experience, it’s usually not worth it, though you will need to use your best judgment considering everything that’s going on in the game. The B&O railroad is landed on the most.

The two utility properties are okay if you can get a hold of them, but they rarely make or break a game, so don’t put too much value on them. Same goes for the dark Purple properties next to the Go. Yes, they are cheap, but they’re also the least valuable property in the game, besides utilities. Get at least one of them to keep your opponents from getting a Monopoly, but besides that, don’t put too much focus on them.

As a general rule, the Light Blue, the Orange, the Yellow, and the Dark Blue properties offer the best value on their sides of the boards because they give higher rent for the same costs compared to their counterparts. However, be sure to consider the odds of landing on the space. If I had to choose between Red and Yellow, I’d usually go with Red, just because it is landed on so often. The overall three best monopolies to have are: Red, Orange, and Light Blue.

Houses & Hotels

Take a look at the stats on your properties. You’ll notice that the best bang for the buck on houses is to buy 3 of them. Only buy 4 houses or a hotel if you are sure you have the extra money.

The best places for you to build houses early in the game is on Orange and Light blue. Try to do it on Orange first, if possible, but starting off with Light Blue is good too.

There are 32 houses in Monopoly. Keep this number in mind. You will want to buy as many as you can afford so your opponents can’t buy as many.

General Tips

Monopoly Board7 is the most rolled number. It is rolled 16.67% of the time. If I see an opponent is 7 spaces away from one of my monopolies, I may put an extra house on that space. Only do this is you can afford the spare cash. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and it’s hilarious when it works. Even if it doesn’t work, 6 and 8 are the second most rolled numbers (13.89% chance) so there’s a decent possibility they’ll hit one of your other properties.

Generally, if you don’t plan on creating a monopoly with it, then go ahead and mortgage a property. Use that money to buy an extra house on a monopoly you do have. Once you have a monopoly, you really want to take advantage of it, especially if you have one when your opponent doesn’t. Going for quick kills is essential. If you have an opportunity to bankrupt your opponent, don’t waste it. Don’t be a nice guy. Kick ass!

The #1 tip to become good at Monopoly is to PLAY MONOPOLY. The more you play, the more you’ll experience first-hand what works and what doesn’t. You’ll develop a feel and intuition for the game. Play online, play with computers, play with your friends and your family.

Keep these tips in mind and you’ll win more games. For even more tips, check out Monopoly’s official web site.

It’s been a long time since I played a game of Monopoly. Now I’m in the mood for a good game. Those are some great tips and I’ll be sure to use them the next time I play.

I plan to write an article soon on good places to play Monopoly online. Maybe we can get a game going with some friends?

I actually thought about buying Monopoly for the 360 purely based on the fact that I haven’t played it in so long. There’s just something about the game…

Not bad tips, I tend to find the light blues best as they’re an easy investment, certainly not as a game winner but good funding for other projects.

I always tend to go for Boardwalk and Park Place, but that’s probably what most people do. They have high payouts. The rate at landing on them though, is very low.

Yeah, not only are they uncommonly landed on, but they’re expensive to add houses for. The dark blues are nice to have as a 2nd or 3rd Monopoly, if you have a lot of cash.

Hey, an easy to read through article that gives you the 101 on statistical advantages in Monopoly! Nice and very approachable. When it comes to Monopoly, I like shooting for the Orange spaces, for sure, but the best is OWNING a side or corner of the board! Very unlikely you’ll get trades that help you do that, but hey, I can dream!

Hahaha, loved this article. I tend to go for Red’s and Yellows first with Orange and purples being secondary. If I land on Park Place or Boardwalk I’m buying it for sure tho. Interesting about 7 being most common number

Yeah, 7 and Doubles are the most commonly rolled at about 17% chance each.

Interesting article, I could certainly improve from that! Not played Monopoly in ages, although I tend to be one of those players who probably doesn’t purchase quite as much as they should.

When I do buy, I usually initially go for Light Blue or Orange and maybe eventually the Greens and Dark Blues if I’m feeling lucky. I always end up getting the cheapest two at the start as well. Probably not very financially sound, but they’re so cheap I can’t resist! :P

The board I have is from the late ’60s or early ’70s I think. Funny how little has changed.

Very nice article about Monopoly you have here, Troopa. I personally like shooting for the orange and yellow spaces, since they’re not TOO expensive, and they’re not so cheap you can’t make any profit from it either.

I remember loving the Kids Edition when I was 6-7 years old. I’d always love shooting for that Orange space, the Haunted House. :P

If you could get a game going with a couple friends, I wouldn’t mind being in on the action.

I wish I could employ these tactics next time I play Monopoly. The problem is that everyone I’ve ever played against has had his or her own set of rules because the real rules are too complicated.

I’m sure everyone’s heard of money claimed in Free Parking, but yeesh, I’m constantly having to play with rules like Mortgage substituting for the price of the deed, beginning with upwards of $3000, and Jail being a permanent elimination from the game, among other things. I’ve seen people think Rent means the price of the houses and hotels (with seemingly no purpose to them), that you get properties of the same color once you keep a certain deed for long enough, and that you can choose to rob the bank but face the penalty of staying in jail for many turns.

    Monopoly becomes like Calvinball…

Wow. Yeah, strategies don’t help much with rules like that. My favorite house rule is, “Everyone with 8 letters in their first name gets $1,000 for passing Go.” I tend to win a lot with that one.

    lmao at those rules.

Rules I play by usually are:
-No buying until you make it around the board once
-Unless otherwise stated, all money from cards or bail goes to the middle
-Middle always has $500 and is replaced everytime it’s won
-Anyone who lands on FP wins the money
-If someone misses their turn, too bad. They gotta wait until everyone else goes
-If someone doesn’t realize someone owes them rent before the next dice roll then their loss

I think that’s pretty much it tho lol

I’ve played with all of those house rules before too. I think they are the most common, especially the free parking get money one.

Usually when I play, the only house rule I end up using is the free parking one. Any money that gets paid to the ban goed in the middle and if you land on Free Parking, you get it all. Other than that, I can’t remember ever playing by any special rules.

That’s probably the one best house rule to have that doesn’t totally ruin the game’s natural balance and play time. Some rules make the game last forever or turn into a “whoever wins is the guy who lands on free parking” deal.

So I played Monopoly earlier tonight, and it was on a new board. They changed the money denominations so we went with the old way. I ended up winning after bankrupting 3 others lol

Well, I did except I built up Green first as I had 1 Yellow and 1 Orange so I traded them off, 1 each, to 2 other players. My bro landed on North Carolina sooo often he started setting rent aside for the hotel lol
