This coming week, hundreds of new game titles will be unveiled at the E3 expo. Surprisingly, the title that caught my eye was Driver 1999. For those of you unfamiliar with the Driver series, here is a short rundown. You are Tanner, a wheelman for various crime syndicates. Tanner has the ability to drive, steal vehicles, and run from good old Johnny Law. Sound familiar?
Driver 2 was an early precursor to the Grand Theft Auto series, which went on to become more successful then the Driver series. Hopefully Ubisoft, the publisher of Driver 1999 will be able to capitalize on their latest endeavor. Like many other fans of the Driver games, I have always anticipated the next installment. Ubisoft revolutionized the video game industry with Driver 2, but was unable to capitalize on the concept they created.
The trailer for Driver 1999 looks great, but it doesn’t showcase any actual game play footage. As of now, the features that are offered by Driver 1999 are sketchy. Ubisoft will be offering new details this coming week at E3. I hope that the publisher can revive the Driver franchise. Fans of the series have been awaiting the release of a new Driver game for years now. Only time will tell if the wait was worth it. Zippygamer will be following Driver 1999 during E3; we will keep you posted as these details become available.

I’ve never played any of the Driver games. I always thought they were just normal racers, didn’t know they were similar to GTA. It’s cool how they went for a really realistic feel for the trailer, but did you see his driver’s license photo? It looks like a very well done police sketch. Really stands out from everything else. lol

I’m a bit of a nitpicky bastard at times, so I’ll let my nitpickiness show through now; the GTA series actually predates Driver by almost two years. Driver predates the 3D GTA games, that’s for sure. However, even then it’s more accurate to say Body Harvest predates the 3D GTA installments. Body Harvest predates Driver by a year and was made by DMA Design – aka Rockstar North.

There are plenty of similarities between Driver 2 and GTA3. If you ever get bored enough, check it out. Thank-you for bringing that Body Harvest thing back to my memory, it’s been awhile.
