It was confirmed a few months back that Michael Jackson did in fact work on the soundtrack to Sonic 3. So lets hear some MJ/Sonic mashups.

Interesting enough, I was just about to post a thread with a question regarding game music.

Anyway, I have a question about Sonic 2. In Sound Test, there's a song I never recall hearing anywhere in the game. That song is 10 in the Sound Test menu for BGM. (In the sequence=repeating: 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 10…I think)

Here’s a David Bowie MV from Omicron Nomad: Soul.

Btw anyone play that game (I haven’t I’ve just been looking for it)? Not like I’m into David Bowie (he’s a little off if you ask me) it just looks like an interesting game.

Ah yes. I believe you are referring to the music from the infamous Hidden Palace Zone which was eventually left out of the final game. To bad it wasn't the one they used in Sonic & Knuckles.

Man…what is your problem, Sega? This should've been included in Sonic 2! Thanks for the video, Joe!

I don't have any videos to post, but I would like to post my 2¢.

I love the soundtrack for Sonic CD (US version). I know a lot of people were pissed when Sonic Gems Collection used the US [PC] version of the game instead of the Japanese version with the alternate soundtrack. I rather liked the soundtrack from the US version. Actually, I once downloaded the Japanese soundtrack from Limewire, and I was not impressed or amused. "Toot-Toot, Sonic Warrior"??? WTF??? It sounded like a bloody B-52's song with really shit lyrics.

The other soundtrack that stole my heart was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. God, the first BGM track (upon entering the castle when the lights come on) is breath-taking. I also liked the background track from the "Underground Catacombs". The whole thing, really; brilliant. It's pricey, but I see I can get the CD soundtrack used from Amazon.com for $30. (Japanese import.) Unless, of course, someone knows where I can download the soundtrack for free. I did a Google search and found some matches, but I'm always leary of downloading anything from a website I know nothing about.

[ADDED LATER]

BTW, I remembered back in 1992 — long before its release — there was a screenshot from Sonic 2 in EGM. I'd always wondered why I never saw that area when I bought the actual game. It's very hazy now, but it looked like a desert area, similar to Sonic & Knuckles. Maybe it wasn't desert-like and happened to be Hidden Palace. BTW, that is one of the prettiest songs from Sonic 2. Shame it wasn't used in the game…

It's been years since I've heard the Japanese soundtrack. But I use to have Sonic CD for the PC and if you browse the CD, you can access the Japanese songs. I remember the theme song reminded me of a mixture of the theme song to Donkey Kong 64 and the ending song to Dragon Ball Z. I like the English soundtrack better too.

I have a an archive of Sonic magazine scans on The Sonic Zone (shameless self promotion FTW) but I don't have any EGM scans for Sonic 2. If you still have the magazine (you probably don't) please scan those pages for me. lol

And the level you are referring to is another scrapped level from the game, Dust Hill Zone.

That's awesome!!! Why, of all levels, did they ditch this one??? I love the metamorphosis from desert to ice. The music…did someone in the private sector have to add that, or was that the music the level used? I ask because, as I'm sure you noticed too, that's the background music for the two-player race version of Mystic Cave Zone.

I do still have my old EGM's, EGM²'s and NP's. Not sure if I have Sega Visions anywhere anymore. Sadly, the one thing I don't have is a scanner. Frown

BTW, is SonicZone still alive? I know you emailed me some long time ago, and I don't remember if I ever created an account or not…seems to me I did. I remember you introducing me to the others as someone from GSF. But, maybe that was the message board Pster invited me to. If SonicZone is still alive and well, I'd love to join.

Oh, and as an afterthought about Hidden Palace Zone, I noticed Robotnik (I refuse to say "eggman") was using the same…device…what have you that he used in Sonic 3. It was in Marble Garden Zone.

Aww shit…I'm gonna have to figure out how to get controller #2 for my Cube cleaned/working again. I feel a Classic-Sonic craving coming on. (Or, I could just use controller #2 on my old XBox. I have: Sonic Mega Collection (GC), Sonic Mega Collection Plus (XBox and PS2), and Sonic Gems Collection (GC). When it comes to the Mega Collection, I guess you could say I bought the same game 3.75 times. (Accounting for the extras "Plus" offered up on PS2 and XBox. PS2 version pisses me off. Maybe it's just my copy of the game, or my PS2, but I noticed the emulation for Sonic 1 is horrid on PS2. Right at the beginning of Green Hill Zone Act 1, the stage music suddenly gets terribly distorted, and all the sound effects fall off on a delay. Jump — hear "boo-up" 1 second later. Grab some rings, hear "g-g-ring" 1 second later! Ooooo!!! Yell )

Yeah, that was the music the level used for some strange reason. You'll notice that a lot of the scenery in the ice part looks a lot like Ice Cap's scenery from Sonic 3.

The Sonic Zone is still alive and well. I recently did away with the forum though.

Yoshi Island really had some good music. It's a shame that Yoshi's Island DS's music was so…blah.
